I've been playing the Icebreakers scenario, and I've got some feedback.

The new difficulty system was a surprise, so I selected "Medium" for my first playthrough.

Overall I enjoy the setup and forces arrayed, but I've noticed some blemishes.

First of all, there's no scoring thresholds set up. I got points from my many kills, but they didn't "matter" as there were no win/loss levels.

The Russians seemed to commence hostilities at a seemingly random time, when I saw some Hypersonics approaching my ships from over the Ice. My ships weren't close to the first Icebreaking corridor yet, though they were emitting offensive ECM. Not much indication that they were about to fire, perhaps intentional?

The rest of the Russian forces didn't immediately go hostile, so I made the decision to engage. I seemed to catch the Russians with their pants down, as it was a massacre. Once I started shooting, I executed the 'Widowmaker' Cyberattack.

Next, not being completely confident in being able to stop the Zircons, I unleashed all 12 of my Hypersonic missiles (which cannot target ships!) against the Russian air bases, specifically against the Runways/RG Taxiways to prevent or at least limit them taking off.

I defeated the Zircons with Jamming and a few missile hits. And my HS missiles struck home. I then engaged anything I could clearly see within range, and blasted everything I could reach, using an array of weapons. I took no losses, and after breaching the first Ice corridor, I called an end to it, as the Russians clearly have been smacked very hard without even scratching my paint. I even sank the Petyr Veliky with MM Tomahawks from the Oklahoma.

Some specific notes:

-The events may need some work as I only got a few of the "twitter" popups. I even got the "Petyr Veliky Sunk" one before I got the "combat may have started" one.

-Ship (Group) pathfinding through the Ice Corridor wasn't very good. Do I need to dissolve the groups and send each ship in individually? I did order them into a Column formation before going through, and it seems only the lead ship in the formation got through without seeming to have pathfinding issues.

-The available land-based missile battery at NAS Whidbey Island (as Cargo) isn't mentioned in the briefing at all, so I'm not briefed on what to do with it? I elected to send some of my C-17s down there to bring it up to Eielson AFB. I called the scenario before they could be deployed.

-I don't know intentional or not it may be, but it seems to me that there may not be enough tanker support given the number of combat aircraft and the distances involved. Maybe I'm not that skilled, but I was a little concerned that I may not have had enough tankers if things got harry, especially since I elected to reserve at least 2 of the C-130 tankers to supporting the rescue helicopters.

Overall I was surprised at how much rapid damage I did to the Russians. If this is "Medium" then "Easy" must be a complete pushover!

I looked at the scenario in the editor. The win/loss conditions seemed to be tied to a Lua script that prints out a text-based assessment of your performance once you either reach the objective or time runs out. The text serves as an epilogue that details the political fallout of the engagement and varies based on whether you reached the objective, the number of losses you inflicted versus took, and the loss of certain assets like the Micheal Monsoor and the Polar Star. It's actually really cool as I really enjoy when scenario authors give you a debriefing (looking at Feltan), but I wish the briefing or description gave the players a heads-up about this.

I haven't played through yet, but I do have a few other notes:

1. The land based missile battery is mentioned in the briefing under ground units, but it is easy to miss as it is in the middle.

2. The "combat may have started" osint report seems to actually be intended as a general update at the start of Day 2. I'm just prepared to chalk it up to osint working with incomplete info and gradually putting things together.

3. It seems the lack of tankers is intentional as the briefing mentions the Russians likely attacking only after you transit the first ice-breaking zone, specifically citing the lack of air cover as a reason.

I'm starting a second attempt, this time on Hard (Wish me luck!)

I see the mention of the Typhoon SSM battery in the briefing now, but it does not tell you what missiles are in the launchers.

The DB says that the launchers can carry land-based Tomahawks, or Land/Surface attack variants of the SM-6.
This is important because I have to choose which airbase to airlift them to with C-17s.
If they only have Tomahawks (864nm range), then I'll have to send them to Prudhoe Bay which is further, but if they've got the SM-6s (1325nm range) I can send them to Elmendorf or Eielson, which puts them still within range of some Russian bases.

I just think it's odd to only mention such an asset (that's packed up and not ready for use) in the list of units, without any comment on it's presence and what could be done with it.

And regarding scoring, That's nice to know about the win/loss being determined at the end, but yes, this needs to be made known to the player in the briefing, as it is all to easy to assume that scoring is broken/not set up, like I did.

The Typhon Bty has 32x TACTOMs. I think the reasoning is that the Typhons SM-6 requires off board targeting and the air to air kinematics would be really bad at that range if the AEGIS ships where having to guide them. They're ground attack capable but not optimized for the role. Personally I'd rather give up some of the range for the heavier warhead on the Tomahawks.

IMO Prudhoe Bay is really the only choice for deploying it. Eielson and Elmendorf are too far away to get any significant coverage. Runways long enough to support a C-17 are very sparse that far north. Only found Prudhoe Bay, Kotzebue, and Nome on Google. The later two not being in the scenario.

Having the later two might make SM-6 shots more viable.

Hostilities kicking off is dependent on the built in escalation scripts, and I think has some built in randomness. I've had the Russians kick off with no warning almost right at the start. I've seen them increase recon assets but not fire. In another play through I was told that their forces are to stop me at all cost. I really like it. Assuming you stick to your orders of not starting a war, it can lead to some stressful moments.

I'm trying hard and I have a lot of issues with the Zircon strike, only one ship of my SAG tries to engage them, the others don't do anything even if they have radars on and have SM-6 (the Tico for instance). Anybody having the same issue? It feels like I'm missing something.

Haven't reached that part yet. By Zircon strike I assume you mean the Pyotr Veliky?

A good way to check the issue with firing is to try manually targeting the missiles. It should tell you why they arent firing.

Good idea. I did that and it says out of DLZ range for the SM-6 on the CG, but it's ok to manually fire from the DDG, although the missile is coming straight at the CG. Weird.

I've completed my 2nd playthrough. This time on Hard.

I lost because I ran out of time. The primary reason seems to be how much of an annoyance it was trying to get the ships through the first Ice Corridor.

This is THE Primary issue with this scenario.

I just could not get the ships through the gap in formation (I deliberately put them all in Column). The lead ship in each formation could go through fine, but the other group members had massive pathfinding issues because they kept trying to go through at cruise speed or higher.

I ended up having to dissolve the groups and manually shepherd each ship through the gap at Creep speed (5 kts).

Combine this with the chaos of trying to reform the ships into a new group that just couldn't maintain a 13 kt station together, and I ran out of time, despite causing major casualties to the Russians.

The Icebreaker Terry Fox was lost to a missile, but I was able to rescue the survivors.

I lost my 688i in a duel with the Severodvinsk, but my torpedoes also sank that sub, so they destroyed each other.

I lost one Raptor to a MiG 29, where some kind of issue with JATMs caused the pilots to close to close range before engaging, and I lost a Global Hawk.

Is it just me or do these showcase scenarios seem not to be play tested very thoroughly before release?

I disabled the adjoining No-Navigation Zones after completing each icebreaking operation. I guided the ships through where the passage was 'supposed' to be, without having to deal with the pathfinding hassles.

I notice that the Rivet Joint got upgraded in 2020, making it the best ELINT platform to use in the scenario. Using a Rivet Joint with Stratotanker support, I located the Pyotr Veliky and guided my three submarines in close to it.

A while after the first icebreaking, Zircons were fired at the second icebreaking ship, sinking it. With a cassus belli estabished, the subs sank the battlecruiser and accompanying oiler.

Then all the FONOPS ships turned on all their radar and jammers, as they can repel the rest of the Russian threats. They sailed to the objectives without any other casualties.
