Im no expert in the ins and outs of sub warfare but reading Red Storm Rising and The Hunt for Red October it occurred to me that active and passive were very different things altogether.

However, every sub ive seen in the game has a active/passive sonar setting. ie combined.

Tom Clancy hinted the active was very loud and gave your position way, and that passive was a listening sensor that did not give your position away but required really good kit and a skilled ear.

Is there a distinction between the two in the game? and if so how do we not fire up one without the other depending on circumstance.
Or is this down to the operator AI?

Active/Passive sonars can be either "off/standby", in which case they operate only as passive sensors, or "active", in which case they operate both as active and passive.

You can control their emission mode either manually ("Sensors" window) or through the various EMCON settings.
