Ambassadors and their travel habits

I handle most of my characters automatically, but not the ambassadors. As you guys know, in order to send an ambassador to another civ you need to have seen their capital planet. And ambassadors who hang around at home gather bad traits, so in the early game I send my ambassadors to whoever I can, even if it is the gizureans or dhayuts that I'll surely have to fight. So what's happened to me so many times is that in preparation for a war I start moving the ambassador but that tends to take years, and as a result I've lost many ambassadors while bombarding.
So what I suggest is, if at all possible, that an ambassador given movement orders should leave the planet reasonably quickly, like in a month or so. I don't think it would be necessary to have them actually travel over to the new place on a ship, but as I understand it (and I could be wrong) the current system is that they just sit there for a long time, depending on the distance to their new home probably, until they teleport over.
I understand they need some time to get their stuff in order, but surely a month should do? In my opinion it would be swell if they were sort of lost in space after let's say a month until they appear at their new home.
