How do you deal with deep raids from Italy - or don't you?

Sorry, me again!

Been having a fair few deep raids from Italy going north east and last one went as far as Mabrish-Ostrau.

Me being stupid thinks this is a good way to get heavy fighters to intercept including night fighters. Of course, there aren't any single engine fighters anywhere near to also intercept.

It seems the enemy long range escorts however can cover the whole distance, and unsurprisingly do bad things to the attackers. I ended up destroying 10 bombers for the loss of 31 (a massive failure I think you will agree!)

I can clearly redeploy single engine fighters to the east and fight it out like I do in Northern Italy and in Northern Europe, where I am doing ok. But it seems to me that the area is so vast that is probably not an effective use of my fighters (this of course links to my other question about getting more 190Gs). I even tried using the single engine night fighters as day fighters in south east Europe, trying at least to fight some of the escorts, which I will just say "didn't work very well".

My question is therefore how do people deal with this threat. Or do you not regard it as much of a threat and just let them bomb?

Hi,

In general I pull back to Germany, Austria and Rumania/Hungary after the 15th AF gets active; they have so many long range escorts and as usual I find it near impossible to bounce their fighters!!! Even witha height advantage of 10000 feet they still bounce me, I really have no idea how it works even after playing this game on and off for 20 years! Cover your important Italian targets with Heavy Flak, especially the acft factories which I trust you are using to make good German engines and frames ....

Cheers,

Tony

Fair comment. I was actually thinking about giving up Italy. Because it turns out the main thing I'm defending in Italy is my airbases - which is kind of counter intuitive! All the flak is going to airbases instead of the things I'm supposed to be protecting. This also goes hand in hand with my experience in the rest of the game where I just had a major attack from the 8th AF and lost vast numbers of fighters. I was wondering both how to get more fighters into the defence but also maybe rotate some of them out of the firing line (I managed to get a Me410 group to 10 morale!) One answer would be to give up on Italy.
