I have returned to the game for the first time in several months, and I am devastated to learn that my beloved space bar can no longer be used to advance the action by 1 minute during battles. What's happened? The space bar has been my friend in this game for years!

Any remedy that you can suggest?

We've changed the hotkey now to Alt rather than spacebar. You can see this in the change notes for the update: https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 6&t=401914

However, we've seen player feedback about this and we're considering ways of brining back this option.

Assignable hotkeys is the obvious way to go.
Some of us old admirals are just too hidebound to use anything as fancy as an ALT key.
Next thing you know, you'll be wanting us to use missiles instead of good old-fashioned guns.

Beloved space bar is fixed. It's just that the default has it unchecked and you need to reset it in preferences when you fire up the game. Same for the missing torpedo hit notification.
