One of the benefits of assault fronts for the soviets is that they eliminate the ammo penalty artillery sus are supposed to have. One would expect this to extend to artillery divisions. Is this the case? Note the ammunition needs for both - left is in an assault front, right is not.
After swapping the status of both front has and ending turn, left is not in an assault front and right is. Note the ammunition needs, and how they haven't changed. My understanding is these numbers will change for artillery sus when in assault fronts.

Looks like the number of ready guns is what's effecting ammo need...

Afaik 'Ammo Need'-Numbers are updated during Logistics Phase. Like if you have a battle and lose Elements your 'Ammo Need' doesn't change until next turn. I assume this what you are observing putting Units into Assault Fronts.

Apologies for being a bit off topic but rather than starting a separate post I will ask here. What is teh best way to use the artillery divisions? I am thinking they will be most useful against dug in positions. Helping to reduce the fort levels as quickly as possible. Is there a better use for them?

Absolutely. Use them to either hold hexes or have them directly help you in massive Soviet (counter)attacks. They have so many guns, they'll disrupt a lot when defending and attacking.
