The War that began in 1937 between China and Japan. Have limited research, deployment, and production . Perhaps with a tension bar that leads to mobilization and full-scale war. Of course with full amount of decisions to be made.
At the very least consider this in DLC, with a much bigger land map.

I second this, the 2nd Sino-Japanese War before 12-7-41 is almost always overlooked

Agree with an earlier start. Can't say I like the Japanese dispositions on December 7, 1941 and would rather have control of the build up to war with the U.S., rather than Pearl Harbor being the start point and being stuck with those initial choices.

Exactly! Being able to choose where and how to fight! Whether you go after China, Russia, India or Australia as your initial war target.

For extended pre- "big" war scenarios (a 1936-37 one for the Euro theatre would also qualify) would require some new scripts or editor settings which would either retard or disallow specific techs before specific dates, tho a simple kludge would be to have relatively few on-map units at start, forcing players to spend most of their income on units and not tech.
