Save Point

Hey all,

Here is another idea I have been mulling over lately.

Has there ever been consideration for adoption of a "save point" option in SC? I think it might be fun -- at least occasionally -- to play a multiplayer game to, say, the start of Barbarossa and then save your game. You could then, for example, try an assault in the north and then go back and try an assault in the south. Alternatively, you might, as the Allies, try a Mediterranean strategy one time or a heavy bomber campaign the next. That sort of thing.

I understand there are scenarios that start at various points in the war, but this way you could start from the save point with the tech, diplomacy, and builds choices YOU want (cf. what the scenario designer has set).

Just a thought.

I would use the editor to set the campaign with the start settings you want - you can do anything, then.

El_Condoro,

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I think that that is beyond my technical abilities. I think I could get the tech levels set (and maybe a few other things), but not the units, their experience levels, and location (etc.).

Actually, adding and modifying units is one of the easiest parts of modding! I have added a cheap and nasty (not narrated) how-to here. There is no substitute for Part 2 of the manual - Designing your own campaigns. There are people on this forum who would be happy to help if you decide to take the plunge into modding.

In the same vein, I have sometimes wanted to switch sides with my opponent in a friendly match, so that each of us could see the same game from the other side's perspective. Obviously, that is not possible with the current PBEM engine. But it could be done more or less by writing a mod which places all the units in the same locations with the correct levels of strength and experience as the existing forces and picking the start date to match the point at which you want to switch sides. The only thing you could not mod exactly is research progression, since techs have to start at 0% (though they can start at higher levels in a mod, and with more chits invested so a power reaches the desired level faster). I would be interested to know if anyone has tried this out.

Note to the devs: it would be great in the future if the Editor allowed players to specify a starting point above 0 for research progression for each tech.

If I understand what you want to be able to do, you could do it by playing it Hotseat. I haven't tried it but I imagine it would be like the old PBEM Panzer General 2, where turns were returned to the opponent by email.
