I’ve looked high and low for this information, but I just can’t seem to find it. But I think I saw this explained somewhere in the past, but I can’t locate that material. What are the overlay shapes on top of the ships? What do they represent. For example there are triangles and there are circles. There’s dotted lines for some circles. I just can’t locate what each of these different symbols are supposed to represent. Commercial, citizen, military? Can someone please explain? Many thanks!

Yeah, they represent your ships.

Triangles are your military ships. Big triangles are fleets (placed over flagships) and small triangles are individual ships. The size of the smaller triangles is relative to the class of the ship (escorts, destroyers, cruisers, etc).

Squares are constructors.

Rombuses are explorers. Big rombuses are colony ships.

Circles are civilian ships. Circles with faint lines forming an X behind the circle are civilian mining ships.

Hexagons are your space ports.

Circles around stars show star systems with colonies.

The dotted lines are more of an additional visual cue, to show connections between colonies. They don't serve any real purpose, besides showing you the general direction of trade routes between your colonies and emphasizing where colonies are found.

The fuel icon shows star systems where ships can refuel (either space ports or Caslon mines)

You can see this information around the galaxy minimap, where there's buttons to toggle their visibility On/Off.

There is also a mod, on the Steam workshop, that changes these icons, and in my opinion makes them better.

Here it is if you would like to check it out, screenshots available in the Workshop page:
