Newbie question:

Just bought the game and it looks quite good.
My question is, are there any counter measures against
energy guided missiles?
Seems like you can use flares or ecm to counter heat guided
missiles, but nothing to counter energy guided missiles.
I assume energy guided missiles are more expensive?
(Haven't investigated that) Otherwise, why bother
ever loading heat guided missiles.
Also, I was playing with a novice jock, and he literally took
20-30 damage trying to stand while in a water hex. Seems
a bit extreme.
Still...nice level of complexity in the game.

There are no counters to GMEs, no. I mean, no specific counters.
Nope, they're not more expensive.
These racks fire one single missile that does a lot of damage. This missile gets bonuses from power-leaking devices in the target such as the engine, shield and active scans.
Notice that GMHs have the longest range in the game, and GMEs have a short range - which is variable according to the target's power-leaking devices explained above.

Oh, about the fall damage, it is halved when you fall in water. That's too high damage. Did you save the game? If so send it to Larkin, he'll check it. There must have been some other factor involved.

I think he was saying that he accumulated that much damage in failing skill checks trying to stand up in water.

So why would it be strange to take 20-30 damage in a few falls?

It's not like there's an upper limit to the damage you can take in water

Well, eventually there is an upper limit...
I had one pilot thrash his Titan/ mech (and himself after awhile) to death after a bad skill check in 2m water.
It was a very bad cascade of bad to worse as he fell, and fell, and fell, and fell, and lost an arm, and fell and fell, lost a leg, and fell, lost Hp...
What was really sad is he was gaining HP back from life support or something, but he could not eject as he was in water. So he just kept flopping around beating himself to a pulp trying to get up for those few seconds it takes to bail. It was both sad, and funny (after awhile).

Yes, if you have at least one mode set to wait, the life support will try to heal the jock if wounded.
As to ejecting in water, only if the titan is prone facing up is the eject button disabled. If it is facing down, you can eject (the hatch is in the back of the head). Not true for acid and lava of course
