What did you learn after playing CMO?

1. I used to think that if you were targeted by a guided air-to-air missile, you were a dead pilot, nothing to be done about it.
In fact, lots of things can be done about it.
2. Stealth is not a Lord of the Rings Elven cloak. it all depends on the situation.
3. Tomahawks are pretty rubbish against highly technological, skilled, determined opponents.
4. Apparently, artillery shells cannot be shot down by SAM defences. QED aren't artillery the go-to option for every military?

I could write several books, it's an incredible simulation from a number of different perspectives. As frustrating as the current bugs are, it's not from sloppiness but the complexity of what the developers have built and they should be proud of that.

Two things come to mind off the top of my head, thinking back to when I started with Command back in 2014-15:
-The importance of EMCON and knowing when and when not to turn on radars.
-Before Command, I seriously overestimated how capable Anti-Ship Cruise Missiles were, and how capable defenses against them were. Many failed salvos against capable targets taught me alot.

You need to always keep combined arms warfighting in mind. even in the naval warfare.

How important stand off weapons are. It is crazy to know as a smaller nation there is literally someone out there that can destroy your government and economy without putting a single boot on the ground. Patience and planning operations is extremely complex that even this sim cant simulate. How much $$$ can be spent on a large scale operation firing off tons of weapons.
I learned a lot about weapon systems with 100s of hours of research for my scenarios and it makes you realize how much propaganda is out there. Its so easy for media to claim "X" weapon can do this or that only to put a few scenarios to test on here and realize how far from the truth it can be.

"Patience and planning operations"
I will triple down on that. No game rewards proper and detailed planning more than CMO.

I primarily learned that I suck at naval tactics. Well, also suck at air tactics. Probably should add in sucking at ground tactics as well. Maybe I should just have been a Quaker...
In all seriousness, I developed a new appreciation on the importance of TOT strikes and the real complexity in trying to pull them off.

After 2 years on essentially one scenario (China vs US):
- Submarines = slow, Taiwan straight = shallow
- Best place for a/c kills in on the ground
- Stand off weapons only
- CSAR uncertain
- Allies/partners/basing will be pivotal
- This conflict should be prevented

Indeed, but they are not building at this rate for a picnic at sea.
The Thucydides' trap will hit one way or another.

If Hyper-sonics are really as effective as in game, Western navies better do something fast. Both offensively and defensively.
Just played a recent posted scenario and one Russian ship took out 5 ships with one salvo.

Sure, but that is only a part of the "game".

Fishing in Gulf of Mexico. Played it twice.
First run pretty sure just the FFG fired as I didn't see a second axis.
Second time both the FFG and the SSN fired.
Same results.
A couple weapons were shot down but not many. The missiles were very accurate.

The most impressive thing I've learned is about actual missile dynamics, for sure. I was amazed to find out how little I understood about how air to air missile warfare actually works!

Late to the show. Some great insight here, nice topic. Mine mimic ones already mentioned plus one or 2.
- Stealth may not be magic but it rocks
- Stealth plus stand-off is deadly
- Importance of SEAD and TOT and Mass
- Importance of stores/supplies/LOGISTICS! Sucks when your F-15's run out of 120D's !
- Submarines are hard to find .... and require huge effort/assets to counter
*** SCOUTING / RECON ****
*** An advantage in scouting is devastating. Small drone or big AEW...
*** Recon/Scouting trumps numbers. (Fire effectively first)
*** Conversely Don't be detected
- Air Refueling is often a game changer (Range, Loiter Time)
- Heavy Helicopters rock. Can place ground units and munitions where they need to be.
- Not enough ASM's usually.
- A bomber with ASM's is a nice thing (quicksink might be good too)
- I often have the wrong loadout for units and it takes a long time to fix. (Nagumo problem)

Nagumo’s problem.
That sounds like a good name for a scenario

The most important thing for me is:
Radar and ECM are fun.

I learned to appreciate just how deadly submarines are.
I also learned just how oppressive a range advantage can be in air-to-air combat
Lastly, I learned the importance of not letting the enemy know where you are. Seriously, enemy reconnaissance assets have always been at the top of my shit-list whenever I'm planning for a scenario.
