Best escort altitude for low level naval attacks

If I am using bombers at 1000 feet to attack ships, what altitude is best for escorting fighters? Should the fighters be a little above the bombers, the same height as the bombers, the same altitude as the CAP is expected to be at, or higher than the expected CAP? Are there pros and cons to all of the choices?

If the game doesn't use high level cover, I suppose setting the fighters exactly the same as the bombers is best.

the only time I remember reading that the game allows for automatic "top cover" is a strike (naval?) that has escorting fighters and the fighters will fly 2K higher than the strike altitude unless otherwise indicated.....under all other scenarios you have to set an altitude. I could be wrong, but that's what I recall.

The game does not use high cover and neither can you sweep a TF. Strike co-ordination is done via target and altitude but as it's a naval attack only altitude matters. Whatever the game does under the hood I know not.

I'm assuming you are used level bombers at 1K and not DBs. TBs can carry bombs and can be effective but a waste, give them torps.

1000 ft is low-nav skill, so be sure your pilots have that well trained. They will NOT use NAV skill in this attack.

Then I will echo the escort altitude. It needs to be close to the nav attack altitude or the fighters will not coordinate at all. As the altitude difference grows, the ability to coordinate will degrade.
