AI Air Assist and getting AOG's to advance

Hi,

I probably have missunderstood someting but I do not get it. I am kind of new to War in the east 2 so I have tested Road To Leningrad a couple of times to try to understand the air war. Been playing War in the East extensively (and older East front games like Schweerpunkt alot). 4 times I succeeded to bag a major victory crossing Neva on normal as a German.

Not once, using AI assist, I can get any AOG's to advance, thus making Luftwaffe having a really nice time doing absolutely nothing after turn 2-3. I have the complete Luftflotte 1 on Advance following Army Group North (in Pskov the second half of the scenario with excellent supply), I have also tried only having I Fliegerkorps on Advance following 4th Panzer Group a complete scenarion with ok supply but Fliegerkorps selects to stay put. I have tried manage depots my self (more effective and frees up AP to rotate leaders more effectively) but also used AI manage depots throughout a scenario. I does not matter, no Advance anyhow. Everytime I have a double track all the way to Leningrad in the end.

Sorry for sounding negative, next time I will manage all AOG movement manually (which I would like to avoid if possibly). Clearly I am doing someting wrong here, I just dont get it. Do I need to disband original depots to starve the AOGs to force them to advance (seems really stupid but I have no clue). Any direction on this would be really appriciated!

I have only done manual.

There are a number of considerations:

* Condition of airfield.

* Closeness to supply and current supply load; priority relative other units.

* Range of air groups.

So, I imagine the AI must consider the above.

I tend to advance based AG type so that fighters and ground attack end up closest to the front.

Remember ground support can be toggled on and off before each move of your turn. You probably want it on for fights that you are not certain that you will win.

If I recall correctly, AI planning offers only one very big advantage which is for AGs to be have multiple missions. When you do it by hand, once you assign an AG to something, it is considered allocated.

The level bombers will tend to stay far from the front, but the fighters and recon aircraft should be willing to advance forward if you have freight forward and decent airbases, and assuming you have the HQ for the formation being followed up forward. I do remember that the AI tends to have a hard time moving units forward in the AGN area (especially the level bombers), but I've seen it move the fighters and recon aircraft closer to the front in that area in the past, and have the level bombers within range, if not as close as you might like.

Another possibility is to move these units to the bases they were actually moved to on the dates they moved there.
Admittedly, it may require a turn or two before the base is supplied. This will require the AOG's to be on "Hold" of course.

I did not add the level bombers.

And some bases I simply could not find; either I picked a close hex, or guessed. It's not perfect in other words.
Also, the move may not make sense. On turn 12, II ZG 26 moved to 176,119 to "conduct naval ops." I already have Tallinn, so I'll leave them in Luga.

Here's the link to get all these bases/dates. The attached Excel file has the turn and hex plotted out already.

Thanks.This is what I do actually.

But, sometimes fighter don't intercept and they are in range - maybe it has something with supply.

Not intercepting can be due to supply, but it's more likely it's due to the incoming flight not being detected early enough for their to be an intercept. Having large size airfields forward will increase the chance of early detection.

Thank you Joel. This is very helpful.
