And a big shout out to the French. We thank you.
My mother's side of the family has been in this land for a very long time and has fought in every American war on one side or the other or both.
A little family history. The Clary (Irish) side of my family has been in the U.S. since 1640. Fought in the revolutionary war. As a loyalist.
"He disappears from Maryland records in 1773. He made his home then in the Ninety-Six District of South Carolina on the Saluda River. A brigade of loyalists was formed in that district and Colonel Daniel Clary belonged to the Dutch Fork Regiment. Despite his age, he did participate in at least one military engagement. In August 1780 he was encamped at Musgrove's Mill and was the head of the Loyalists there. He was captured by young Whigs but was able to fool them into thinking he was a Whig and rode away to King's Mountain. The western Carolina's had long been at odds with the eastern part and when the eastern part allied with the Patriots, many of the western Carolinians sided with the British. Colonel Daniel Clary was eventually captured and imprisioned. In 1783, he and his plantation came under the Banishment and Confiscation Act. He petitioned the South Carolina legislature and was allowed to return home. (Ref: Clary of Maryland, Clary, pg 65-67"
The Clary's fought on both sides in the Civil War. One from South Carolina marched off to war with his five sons to return after the war alone. And Robert E. on the Union side: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_E._Clary. His first and middle
names are just a coincidence.
