Thanks

Are you asking about ASW, AAW or SAG defense? Ships take differing roles depending upon the threat.

In the surface combat reports you sometimes see screening messages like the following when more vulnerable ships like carriers or merchants get caught up in the gunfire.
CL Isuzu engages CV Enterprise at 6,000 yards.
DD Akebono engages CV Yorktown at 6,000 yards.
DD Minegumo engages CV Yorktown at 6,000 yards.
Range increases to 13,000 yards.
CL Isuzu collides with DD Minegumo at 92 , 56.
CV Enterprise , CV Yorktown , CV Saratoga screened from combat- escorted by DD Tenedos , DD Farragut , DD Fanning ,DD Stevens , DD Brown ,DD Clarence Bronson , DD Bell.
Who in the task force screens whom, and when it happens is out of your control as the admiral or commander you appointed to lead the task force runs the show (all handled by the computer) However, it's up to the player to make sure their task forces are as well stocked with escorts as they can be.

If it's surface engagement, heavier units screen CVs while they are escorted away by DDs (as in example above).

Thus, for that reason, CV TF should have fast BBs, CAs and CLs (and also for AAA reasons).
