I'm having a HECK of a time assaulting Truk, my troops are out of supply & running low on manpower. Can they be resupplied/reinforced without sending a new division?

Thanks all!!

Well, assaulting Truk on the 8th of December 1941 is not a good idea. Maybe a picture would help? Not just of the units but also of the area.

Send an amphib TF with only supplies, and embedded BBs. Preferrably lots of cargo ships with few suplies each, so that they empty in one phase so that they not draw unnecesssary fire from Truk CDs. Do not send troops piecewise, this will only trigger obligatory shock attacks and can get ugly for your assaulters. If you are not short of time, wait for your attackers on land to restore some of their fighting power. Bombard from air and sea in the meatime. Fortified and manned atoll bases are a tough nut to crack, but time and patience work wonders

And search the forum for threads on landing on atolls. You will learn that firepower is more important than infantry AV, and it doesn't require as much groceries!

When you do offload supplies, be aware that your troops already ashore may be bombarded by the enemy.

Truk has quite a fortress.

Bring in tank battalions and combat engineers...a lot, with your force.

I'd have said anytime.

Even Ponape was painful in my recent game in Nov 1944 and it's fortress is peanuts compared to Truk.

After a bad experience at Truk in one of my first games, I think I'd rather amhib Tokyo with troops armed with plastic forks.

Well, they did bypass Truk IRL. Not worth the casualties. After Operation Hailstone hammered the crap out of it, it wasn’t even worth taking, and had no teeth; too far from anything, also.

This is the garrison of Truk in 1944, according to Wiki.

Truk Atoll Fortress

Japanese Navy units
4th Fleet HQ - Vice Admiral Chuichi Hara
4th Base Force HQ
41st, 43rd, 47th, 48th Guard Units
Total: 27,856 men
Equipment

18 80 mm naval guns
10 150 mm naval guns
280 13.7 mm AA guns
12 127 mm AA guns
(Note: the article said they were really short on ammunition for these guns, and a recently arrived and still loaded ammunition ship was blown up during Hailstone)

Japanese Army units

31st Army HQ (128 men), Lieutenant-General Shunzaburo Mugikura
52nd Division
Divisional HQ (298 men)
69th Infantry Regiment (2,694 men)
150th Infantry Regiment (2,136 men)
Tank Unit (103 men)*
Signal Unit (241 men)
Transport Unit (105 men)
Sea Transport Unit (1,132 men)
Ordnance Service Unit (117 men)
Field Hospital (649 men)
51st Independent Mixed Brigade (4,789 men), Major-General Kanenobu Ishuin
Brigade HQ
336th to 341st Independent Infantry Battalions
1st Artillery Unit
Engineer Unit
AA Gun Unit
Signal Unit
11th Independent Mixed Regiment (1,366 men)
9th Independent Engineer Regiment (483 men)
58th Anchorage HQ
Total: 16,737 men
Tank unit had no tanks, because the transport ship was sunk by air raid.

Is Truk considered an atoll in-game? I just looked and it is not marked as such on the hover message.

Playing stock scenario 1.

In stock, no it's not, it's a medium sized island.

Truk is an archipelago with about 93 sq. miles area. They used the bigger islands.

Thus it was seen very beneficial pre-war, could not hit anchorage with naval gunfire from distance.

Of course, USN naval air power did smash the place quickly in 1944 and Truk was just POW camp after it.

Land area of 93 square kilometers - about 35 square miles.

And not 100 miles across but 43 nmi by 27 nmi.

Btw, Truk had no airfield at the start of the war, construction of the first strip had started only in November 1941 and it was operational barely in time for the Rabaul invasion in February 1942. Modders, man your editors^^
