Friendly fire British tank destroying another British tank

Hi
I played Counterattack at Villers le Sec as the Germans vs the British AI.
In the British move phase a British Sherman moved into a wooded hex occupied by a German Pz-IVD.
In the following German defensive fire phase and the next German turn's fire phase I was unable to attack the Sherman occupying the hex with the Pz-IVD.
In the German move phase I moved the Pz-IVD out of the shared hex there was no opportunity fire.
In the following British defensive fire phase the two British Shermans adjacent to the Sherman which shared the hex with the Pz-IVD opened fire on the Sherman and destroyed it.
