A question or two, please!

First let me say that this is a wonderful game, I am having a great deal of fun.
I do have a couple of questions, as they pertain to titan design.
The manual is not clear as to what are the benefits of shields, ECM, or flares.
Which specific defensive techniques work with each weapon group? What ARE the weapon groups? Strengths, weaknesses?
Also, the SRM, LRM, NM, GMH, and GME series weapons. Nowhere is there a breakdown of what these weapons are, what they do, how often they fire, and what the countermeasures are.
Same for the Black ray, nuetron, em pulser, etc.
I am trying trial and error at this point, but with random selection of titans, it is rather hit or miss.
Thanks for your help.

1- Shields, ECM and flares are covered on pg 14-15 of the manual.
2-Weapon groups are: Close Combat, Guided Missile, Unguided Missiles, Cannons, Energy. This is the rock, paper, scissors of the game itself and is beyond the scope of one post. Shield Blocks energy, Flares deflect Guided Missiles, Ecm helps against Unguided missiles but attracts Energy Guided Missiles [G.M.E.]. There is a long list. These are only defenses that reduce the enemys chance to hit you. They are not impervious. Better systems do a better job.
3-Missiles are covered on the bottom of pg 15 and the top of page 16 of the manual.
4-Black Ray Gun, Neutron, Emp are covered under energy weapons on pg 15.
5- See the Titan selection thread for the answer to your last comment. There has been a lot of talk about this very subject.

Thanks for your answers
From the manual:
Flares: "...designed to elude heat guided missiles..."
What are the heat guided missiles? Can't find the info anywhere.
The book also say that both shields and ECM attract energy guided missiles. Are the G.M.E. the only energy guided missiles?
After a VERY thorough re-read of the manual, I have determined that ALL rack systems are rockets, thus unguided. Is there any additional defense for these types of munitions?
"Meson guns penetrate armor and may cause system damage to the target." Does this mean meson guns ignore armor altogether? Or just a percentage of it?

G.M.H. = Guided Missiles Heat or heat guided missiles These zero in on your enemies heat signature. The hotter your enemy is running the better your chances to hit them. Flares which are also very hot can deflect these missiles as they will sometimes zero in on the flare rather than your Titan.
G.M.E. are the only energy guided missiles. They do nine pt damage and are fine all by themselves. I have a growing love affair with this weapon. To discourage these turn off your shield and ecm. Active scanning can also encourage these to zero in on you.
There isn't a specific system defense against unguided missiles. Dodging, Hiding and generally being where they are not exploding is a good idea.
You have 2 parts to your armor. External and Internal. Mesons, a weapon derived from the Mu-Meson, a subatomic particle, and related to the Gluon ignores external armor and destroys internal armor with a chance of damaging a system. The gamble is that the weapon which does a small amount of damage normally will also damage an enemy system.

Make use of F1 in the factory when the mouse is over systems or specific weapons and you will get some info.
