How to defend railyards

Playing as Axis, using Air Assist.
Soviets bombing and damaging railyards to great affect, 20-40% damage.
The Soviet attacks are mostly unopposed, no Axis fighter cover.

How can I better protect against these attacks?
Why doesn't AI Assist provide any aircover?

It’s a common problem with AI assist, it generally positions AC too far from the frontlines, not really an issue with Bombers which have a long range, but fighters have short ranges and have to be close to the front line. Easiest way to check is to create a “Superiority” AD over the rail yard and see if any fighters are in range.

With AI assist you can try giving fighter AOGs an “advance” stance and follow a HQ on the frontline to force it to move fighters closer, although the best way is to move AOGs manually.

Agreed.
I've started to move fighters closer and put them on hold stance, otherwise AI will move them back next turn.

If I create a Superiority AD, will AI remove it?

FYI, here's the hex-coordinate of the actual bases used by Bf 109,110, and Ju 87 Gruppe's in '41.
Actually, not a good idea to follow this to the letter (supply problems!), but it does give one an idea of how often they moved to remain close to the front.
