Routing to Locations Outside of Surrounded Pocket?

Next Question:

How do surrounded populations evacuate through enemy lines?
The population at Odessa has evacuated 5 times now (presume it is being done through interdicted waters), so who keeps rebuilding the fort?

How do Routed units displace to locations outside of surrounded pockets?
As can be seen in the screenshot the unit attacked in the isolated Leningrad area routed not through one enemy line, but through two enemy lines (routed units displacement location is highlighted in red to the east of the German line).

Both evacuating populations and routing units have routinely crossed enemy lines throughout this first trial campaign game I am playing. How is this being done? Beam me up Scotty?

Yes they use ships and boats and other water(did they have subs?) methods (sometimes they can use the ice to ski or skate or drive a supply truck as they did historically, usually happens when ded moroz is near).

To isolate a port you need to have 2 more interdiction level on the water hexex that connect it to other ports than your opponent(isolate the water too).

To check if a hex is isolated check that it actually states: Hex isolated. (its described somewhere in the manual too).

Odessa is connected to other ports via its port and Leningrad is connected through the Osinovets port which you have not captured(its one hex above your strangely stripped division and the 1delay captured hex) to the ports further east (i do see a port to norteast of your elite moto - totenkopf probably). So the supply flows through that port to Osinovets port to Leningrad. Soviets flow freely too and ammo and bread and almost certainly small(or not) amounts of vodka. When you really isolate them they will hate you cause the vodka will quickly disappear and its not very hot there. So beware they will be angry and shooting at you.

I strongly recommend consulting the manual in more detail as this topic is at least somewhat covered there in more detail than i can give you in an online post.

A kind additional warning: water can freeze in this game, you might want to read about it too. Just saying, cause i see that winter is coming. Also soviets in the first winter become strangely aggressive and violent for absolutely no reason. Did someone really forget to buy for your soldiers some winter clothes?

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

While I haven't yet taken the port in the Leningrad pocket, I did just take the port the Totenkopf was adjacent to.

I'm still amazed that the displacement movement of the routed unit far exceeded any distance it could have marched in one turn while in good order.

Manual: 23.13+

Note: The devs did forget to add a limit to the range of displacement moves(or support unit movement), so please do not ask how things move around half the map. There are rumors of the lost knowledge of teleportation.

My 'head-canon' for this is that once a formation is routed the counter represents the HQ elements using motorized transport (and in this case naval transport) to retreat to a safer location in order to reform. The surviving combat elements take longer to come back to this location in dribs and drabs which is why it can take time for the formation to rally and lose its routed status.

The map size, size of units represented on map and the week long turns do result in some abstraction that on first look can appear wonky. But I've found I can almost always find a reasonable explanation (in my head at least) for what goes on.
