Is this game compatible with Windows 11?

No issues for me. Just remember to use DxWND to start your game.

Gretings from a new (old) guy on the forum.

Although a grognard from back in the old Avalon Hill (Stalingrad, etc) days and have fought all the way through War in the Pacific (including Uncommon Valor, and original WitP) eight times all the way from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay. Never won as the Japanese and never lost as the USN, but have gotten a lot of insight into the challenges that Yamamoto, Nimitz, et el faced.

Because of the complex multi-level turn resolution, WitP is a very slow game. As a wag put it WitP is a game for the incarcerated, but it seems like a first person shooter compared to ED/BTR. BTR virtually freezes at the game time XX:46 mark. I can get it running again by hitting STOP, waiting few seconds then hitting CONTINUE, but I seem to have to do this manually. You can't just walk off and build the next Panama Canal waiting for the turn to crawl by as in WitP. BTR freezes and stays frozen until I intervene.

Is this normal or just a Windows 11 hangover?

BTW noob question: What is DxWND?

Welcome taxcutter, from a fellow AH gamer from the early '70's. Midway was my first, then Gettysburg, D-Day, Stalingrad, etc.

DxWND is a free piece of software that allows old DOS-based games to run on modern platforms like (anything after windows 7). It is still being developed and supported by some mystery genius who maintains the website for it. It runs in the background while you play EDBTR. I have it set to run automatically when I boot up and it only effects the game target that you set it to. It is otherwise totally uninvasive.

So it is the answer to your problems. The game minutes will go by so fast you will have to slow it down in the Options settings to be able to follow it. Read the DxWND made easy thread and if you have any questions just ask on that thread.

Compatible with w11 just as much as W10 as far as I know.

Thanks for the help. Sounds like a dragon long since slain, but another noob question: Where can I find the DxWND thread you referred to?

Shortly, I'll work up the guts to re-install with DxWND. In earlier such evolutions, disaster has resulted.

I'm getting the hang of BTR as the Allies. Kicking butt in daylight, but I have to figure out night bombing

Thanks simovitch & Orm.

DxWND worked like a champ. No more 4 hour turn resolution.

Next ... get Seabee installed on WitP-AE. I've used Seabee before, but that was years ago.

I'm running the game via dwxnd and have an issue whereby the screen goes black if I move the mouse pointer off of a radio button.

It happens in the settings menu and campaign menus, but not on the main screen.

Any ideas?

Fixed it eventually by using the right version of dwxnd, i.e. v2.05.50 not the latest version

Yea the latest versions will probably work but you will really have to know what you are doing with the settings to get it right.
