How much micromanagement should I be doing?

I want to check the following situation I've encountered to see if the game is working as designed or if I'm not using some features correctly:

I have a tank platoon east of a forest. I want the tanks to move through the forest and stop at the west side of the forest just on the tree line, so they have some cover and concealment, but so they can also see the clear terrain on the other side. I give the lead tank of the platoon an advance order to the tree line position, choosing SOP move in cover and seek cover, and the lead tank moves to where I want. However, since they are travelling in a line, and since the west forest tree line is irregular, one tank stops out in the open, and other stops in the trees with no line of sight.

Is this working as designed? It means that I have to move each of the other two way points manually when I set them, which undermines some of the benefit of giving group orders.

You can place a Defend waypoint outside the forest, open it in the Waypoint Editor (Ctrl+RMB), and set its Formation to what you think is the best in the end of their path.

So this could be the end result.

Thanks for this. Although it looks to me that the command tank doesn't have line of sight to the defend waypoint. Is that correct?

It does have, you can see the light area. The % is not displayed because this was an older version of the game.
