I seem to recall that to avoid pilot commanders being killed and need to be replaced frequently, I set him to group reserve.

Is this something new to the current 1128 beta or did I miss out something?

The computer may fly them anyway. It would be better to not have a commander who is also a pilot in the unit.

That is a lot of un budgeted PP expenditure
Thanks for the prompt response, RangerJoe

You are welcome.

Depending upon his other stats such as leadership, you might want to have him either command a training unit or have him as a pilot/instructor in a training unit. The trainees will train faster, they tend to gain experience and skill up to the average +5 in the unit. So by putting those highly experienced pilots in with trainees, you can have the trainees increase their stats faster. That even works when the experts are in Group Reserve mode.

Thanks for the reminder. In the current interation of my setup, I did create several high Ldr/Air/Def commanders to helm Ftr training units.

It is not the Air and Defense that is important for the training units, it is the first two skills listed. What you put into your training units are your better combat commanders.

I understand Lead for XP gains. My pilot commanders also have high Air + Def skills to average up the (ftr) units stats, so that the trainees are below the unit average.

I was referring to their leadership traits, not their individual skill set. My error . . .
