Can anyone provide an explanation for this Black Screen that occurs repeatedly during the Air Execution Phase?

It lasts anywhere from 20 seconds to 2-1/2 minutes with the cursor changing repeatedly to the Windows wait icon and the game top bar indicating the program is (Not Responding) repeatedly.

Please don't tell me it is because my platform is underpowered.
I'm running on a 4.7ghz 8-core CPU w/ 128gb of ram and a 6gb graphics card.

just a black screen, no death. Usually happens during heavy AI calculations. 2.5 mins long is strange though.
