Attacking moving ships

Post by Kobu »

Hi

I have seen this bug with several weapons, in this case I give the example of HIMARS but it happens with others too.
The problem is that certain weapons like the HIMARS when they attack moving ships have a precision that they should not, that is, they always hit the ship.

The projectiles fired by the HIMARS are not guided, so if you attack a moving ship it is almost impossible to hit it.

I know that the simulator extrapolates the position of the boat taking into account speed and course but it seems very difficult for me to get it right like this.

Thoughts??

My thoughts...

At one time this was explained that its an abstraction because the hit calc for unguided munitions is done at launch so the outcome is set no matter where the target ends up. The unit was dead before it moved. The movement is just a legacy of the abstraction. IIRC.

If so, it wouldn't make any sense.

It is curious because if you do the test with the tanks it is much more difficult to hit it, with the ship it is always right.

In any case, I think there is a lot of room for improvement here.

The rocket isn't acting like its guided. If you increase the speed of the ship just 2 knots after the rockets are launched, they all miss. Even a small alteration in course post-launch is enough for a miss.

I see this result as very plausible. The rocket has onboard INS and GPS that gives it pinpoint accuracy on the data/spot predicted at launch. Its the point of HIMARS. Combine that with a solid lock from the P-8, its relatively easy to drop a high accuracy rocket on the predicted position of the ship. As long as speed and course stay exactly the same, there is a very high probability of a hit.

edit: Even before launch, I changed the ships speed to 25 and all the rockets missed.

But the M31 are guided. HIMARS is the platform, but fires a lot of rockets and the ATACMS. Only the M26 are not guided.

The db for this particular round is listed as having INS only with no sensors, from what I can see.

btw, I don't consider INS/GPS by itself as guided as in any intelligence. Its more a precision aiming system. It goes where you point it.

More info in this link, the M26 should be unguided.

Inertial navigation system, I think is an error in the db.

M31 seems right, INS GNSS.

I don't see an M26 in the scenario. Just the 31.

They are armed with M31, but you may change to M26, that are named guided, what is wrong.

I was trying to compare M26 with M31, but both are guided in the db, M31 adding GNSS.

Kobu commented that the HIMARS fired unguided weapons.

But all are guided except the M26.

So I tried to use M26 besides the M31 that was already used in the save.

However it turned out that the M26 is also guided in the game.
