Airplane launched ammo

What you're opinion about airplane launch ammo ? Even with a long delay time ? I wondered for this when I play a long scenario and when after 5-6 turns my arty unit finished all ammo and for next almost 30 turns they ''take a breath''.

Well, assuming the aircraft exhausts all ammo on the first or second run (which any good pilot would do I guess), it does take time to return to base and make the plane ready for the next sortie. So I'm OK with long reload times.

So, could it be implemented ?

Hm...I'm not a scenario maker, so I'm out of my depth here, but here's an idea:
Is it possible to script the aircraft to automatically receive damage? I know it's done for some planes so that they won't return. Then you could assign another identical aircraft as a reinforcement later on.
Have no idea if that works, but I guess a 'workaround' is necessary since I don't think it's possible to adjust reload times directly....

another work around would be to receive more aircraft at different turns throughout the scenario

I'm against planes being reloaded in game time. Anyone have actual (historical!) data? Only mg rounds I can imagine being reloaded in 10 minutes or so, loading the bomb bays will take more time. And don't forget time spent in transit, landing and taxi-ing. Refuelling not to be forgotten.

During the Bulge and D-Day when fighters were doing round-the-clock attacks, they were doing more than 5 missions per day. The 9th Tactical Airforce during the breakout section of the Battle for France offered fighters on-call almost continuously, allowing Patton to attack in 4 different directions at once.

5 missions per day still works out to about 5 hours between missions. That's longer than the duration of actual time in most SPWAW games.
Loading MG ammo into a bomber could be made faster by just dumping it in and letting the crew do that while in flight but I don't know if they ever did/were trained to do that. Bombs take hours to load up in those old planes.
Most of the aircraft modelled in the game are fighters or CAS-types and those have to be completely loaded on the ground. Not something that's done that quickly because if the belts of ammo aren't put in exactly right, they jam up and then the gun's useless. I forget the exact weight of a 30 foot belt of ammo but it's pretty heavy so not something you just flip in. Much different than the shorter belts that infantry and armour use.

Gavris, did you mean airdropped ammo crates? That's what I got from your post. That would be a great thing. Have them dropped in just like a supply run...

Ah, that's what he meant.
Good idea! And hahahaha I can already see it - the Dakota comes roaring in with your precious ammo, recieves AA, veers off target and drops that beautiful cannister right into enemy territory! Go fetch!

Bel: NO you just don't understand....target the air drop, like a bombing run, at the AI and you'll get a perfect airdrop on your troops. Viola ammo for the yanks. Agree ???? :>)

As long as you don't have Sherman's. The ammo crates would crush them flat.

Hahah true. Just park a tank somewhere COMPLETELY out of the path of the bomber, and he'll find it sure enough.

Ammo can in fact be droped from planes
Play Wild Bills "Lighting Strikes in Norway"
Its one of my favorite scenarios
Ammo crates are droped along with you
