Greetings all. Been getting back into WIF action and as usual, its a blast (have more time now). A few questions:

1) As the CW, do you tend to setup convoys in the Bay of Biscay or do you avoid it? Drawbacks include easier access (than the North Atlantic) and higher sea boxes for the Germans and Italians, but, its easier to defend for the CW and its an additional battleground that dilutes the Axis NAV's all going to the Med which is further from the UK and more problematic to to get NAV's and long range fighter to (not to mention supply issues for both sides). One would think its best to avoid Biscay for convoys and have it go through the Faroes Gap instead, but perhaps a mix of the two is the best option?

2) For the US gear up of production, when would you tend to say is the average time to be able to do this (July/August 1941)? How about for the War Appropriations Bill?

3) For mutual DOW of minor countries for Germany and Italy (eg: Spain), there are two separate rolls (even if done simultaneously). But when I just did a run through of both powers DOW the USSR there was only one roll in total (treated them as combined). Is this a bug?

4) If Ethiopia is liberated by the CW, is it possible to build and have some of its units move to India/Burma to help in defense? As the CW, what do you do in terms of the defense of the Indian Ocean, beyond the obvious garrisons of key points ahead of time? Do you keep a small fleet in the area (eg: in Aden or South Africa) or largely vacate it to concentration on the Kriegsmarine and Regia Marina who are already a bloody handful?

3 This depends on what the US Entry Chart says.

For example:

"7. Italy declares war on CW or France or both (Ge/It)"

In this case, if GE has declared war earlier, and IT declares later, it is one different roll than GE , even though IT can still declare for the same cost, to FR, CW or both.

12. "Germany or Italy or both declare war on USA or China (Ge/It) "

in this case all the same, only one roll

"Axis declares war on

Belgium, Finland, Rumania, Sweden or Switzerland
Poland, Spain, Turkey or any American country
Other minor "

IMO in this case (minors) it is also one roll for both.

And in the case of USS the same, one only roll:

"Germany or Italy or both declare war on USSR"

It's almost a must to choose the War Appropriations Bill and especially the Gear Up for the US as soon as it can do so. The war is won in the factories. The sooner the US has got a nice army and airforce together with a lot of sea lift, the better it is.

I like to build the Ethiopians (especially the HQ) for use in Burma and India (those in India free up the Indian army).

The Bay of Biscay is a good place at start of the game for your convoys. If you build a good number of convoys with the CW each impulse (4 a turn is almost a must in the first two years of the war) you can slowly change the routing towards the Far Oes Gap.

On the first question I meant...when on average do the two US Economic gear ups tend to occur? For instance, in my game its May/June 1941 and the US has not geared up at all yet. Probably will occur in July/August 1941. Is this about right? Am i behind where the norm is? Thanks.

I don't know if anyone has made such a calculation. I can't answer your question.

I personally do not have a solid database of finished games of Global War in MWIF. But I have seen several statistics from WifCon's (playing the WIF boardgame), comparing the entry dates of the USA. If I recall correctly, most DoW on USA by Japan occur as soon as USA is about to/just passed War Appropriations bill. This happened in most games either in 41ND or 42JF. It usually took one year = 6 game turns, to reach the required tension levels after choosing Gear Up for passing War Appropriations. So if these findings from WIFFE correspond to typical MWIF game play, I would dare to say, yes, you are quite late with Gear Up and will probably be late with War Appropriations bill as well, allowing the Japanese player a choice for an (historical) early DoW in either 41ND/42JF (weather is VERY important!) or a later date.

Way back when, there was a discussion on how the US entry chits should be modeled. A lot of research was done and the way it ended up was that the average turn for gear-up was J/F41 and war appropriations 6 or 7 turns thereafter. Aggressive Axis play tends to speed up the schedule and aggressive Allied play to slow it down. Also it is dependent on Axis strategy like attacking USSR in 41 or 42 or doing a "Sitzkrieg". Generally, those are listed in the order of slowing down US entry.

No bug. This works as intended. This is shown in the notes to the US Entry Chart on the MWIF chart, and in the rules(As shown below)-
