Mostly, my exposure to them was as a victim to those Tokyo Express runs down the Slot. Kinda hard to stop those bombardment missions.

Cost me South Dakota beaten to hell ( Would have sunk had she not be in port) And North Carolina sunk there and then took a long lance as well which can't have helped but those things are monsters.

Jap = Yamato, 3 CA'a 1 CL and 6 Destoryers.

VS

2 BB 4 CA's 2CL's and 8 Destoyers.


And got may *** handed to me.

Got him next time though.. 1000 odd mines, twenty pt boats, and every marine dauntless with wings and an engine.

Me thinks wobbly may soon find out what her and her sister together can get up too.....

Only problem with them is the kongo's are the only other BB that can keep, if you want a little more punch...

Wouldn't you know it - 10 x 1,000 lb bomb hits, and it didn't even slow her down. Didn't even get the telltale smoke after 10 SYS damage .

I wonder herbie, how much repair work the boys in Truk have managed to accomplish on the Yamato after one of my subs put a well aimed fish into her.
You better hope you don't accrue any damage in the fight as they are going to have to run the gauntlet of subs and Mister Spruance on the way out!!!
The two monsters may be impervious to 1000 pd bombs but the avengers are a little better at getting through the flak than their older cousins - so torps may again be impacting on their hides!

Little secret mate, sent her straight back to tokyo, about one month until released again, that single torp cost 25 damage or so.
I cant resist waiting for her, quite a few ships about to be released actually.

The only time I ran into her she got smoked. Yamato, 1 CL, 4DD vs. South Dakota, Washington, Indiana, North Carolina, Vincennes, Atlanta, and 3 DD. Ouch...

That ship is one tough cookie!!!

I put (count them) 11 fish in her side and hit her with god knows how many 1000lb (which didn't even scratch the paint work) and I'm still waiting on confirmation that I sank her. I figure she's at the bottom or in for some very long repairs.

At least I hope so......

I sent 15 PT boats in to Lunga on Patrol.
Of course the Yamato decided to bombard that night.
They all died...however one did go in and get a torp hit on Yamato.

I saw Yamato in combat 5 or 6 times, and every time it was IJN victory. Latest example:

Combat started at 23000, then 19000, 16000 and at 14000 yards TFs broke off. Yamato and North Carolina were fighting each other solely. Yamato got 4 16inch shells, which didn’t cause any damage. NC received 4 18inch shells from Yamato (3 other were 6inch shells, did no damage) first T94 shell did not penetrate NC belt armor (at 23000), but 3 other went thru NC deck armor and eliminated NC as a combat unit. Several turns after my sub finished NC with 2 torpedoes near Noumea. According to my opponent’s notes, 3 T94 shells caused awful damage. System- 70, Flt.- 50, Fire- 22, although NC was still able to move at 7 knots.

It’s strange but Yamato doesn’t use her monsterguns much, she relies on smaller calibers in combat, hopefully her armor works always.

But sister Musashi ran into Maryland and Colorado at Lunga one evening - and got a Nasty Surprise... Both Mary and Colorado are on their way back to Pearl at about 12 kts. with about 50 sys damage. Musashi is where no IJN repair facility can reach her - about thirty miles South of Rabaul on the bottom. Took somthing like 28 16" rounds. Both of the Old Ladies took serious sys damge and had flotation values in the hi 40's, but they survived. Just had a looonnnnggg round about trip back to Luganville where they fixed the most diffucult floatation damage, then crept back to Noumea. My Fleet Op Reports say they will be back sometime next year - maybe.

Ok its been long enough I'll fess up. You took out one 6" turret and 3 AA mounts. Total sys damage 7.

She's almost repaired along with Nagato, Mutsu, Kirishima and Kongo. Now where are North Carolina and Wahington?:D

Yes, i've noticed that too. Is especially ******* off when it happens during BB missions. I guess maybe it's to make up for the slower rate of fire for the Big guns, but then maybe not....

I have had many a tough battle against the Yamato.

The real history about the destruction of Yamato and her sister ship, Musashi, is just as interesting and unbelievable:

The Yamato:

When the Allied landing on Okinawa touched off desperate counter attacks by the Japanese air forces in early April, 1945, the Yamato was suddenly assigned a very unusual and grim mission code-named Ten-Go.

The Yamato was to make her way to Okinawa and use her big guns in a suicidal encounter to stop the Allied invasions of the island.

However, the Yamato never made it.

The Yamato and her escort ships were only 175 miles from Kyushu, when they were attacked by swarms of US carrier planes. At 1252 all the Japanese ships opened fire and even the Yamato's 18 inch guns joined in firing special "shotgun" shells at the attacking US aircraft. The Yamato was hit by bombs starting at 1240 hours and then 10 minutes later she was hit on her port side by torpedoes. She then received 8 more torpedoes on her port side and two on her starboard side which served to right the ship slightly. By 1405 she could no longer maneuver and quickly lost headway. At 1417 a final torpedo hit her in the bottom as she was listing to 20 degrees and she finally rolled over.

Her No.1 magazine then exploded at 1435 sending a huge cloud of smoke not unlike an atomic mushroom cloud thousands of feet in the air (it was said the cloud could be seen from Japan.). Her crew losses were astronomical as well over three quarters of her crew died.

The Yamato had received no less then 12 torpedo hits and almost 10 heavy bomb hits.


The Musashi:

While the Japanese task force was making it's way through the Sibuyan Sea on the morning of October 24, 1944 Musashi was attacked by a large force of U.S carrier aircraft. Though the ships put up a heavy barrage of AA fire, the Musashi was singled out for most of the attack.

By the early afternoon after the second wave of planes had left, her forepart was flooded up to the third deck and she was taking on a list to port. Her speed had to be reduced to 22 knots. She had been hit in the first two waves by at least 7 bombs, 9 torpedoes and 15 or more near misses. That she could stay at 22 knots was simply amazing. It was only after the third wave of attacking planes, in which an additional 10 bomb hits were scored and 11 torpedo hits, that the Musashi started to lose maneuverability due to her worsened bow trim.

Her bow was so deeply awash that her speed had to be reduced to 6 knots. Yet she still recovered her list by 4 degrees. Towards the evening , about four and a half hours after the third attack ended, the situation suddenly became worse. Her list to port increased and she went down at 1835 hours with the loss of 1,039 officers and men out of a crew of 2,400.

The Musashi had received approximately 19 torpedo hits and almost 17 heavy bomb hits.

I read "A Glorious Way to Die" (or title similar to that) written by one of the officers on Yamato when she was sunk. He points out some flaws in her design which contributed mightily to her demise. The first was the concentration of flak on the superstructure. When the Americans attacked they sent in waves of F6Fs strafing and dropping anti-personnel bombs which slaughtered the guncrews. He describes literal waterfalls of blood flowing down on to the main deck from the gun tubs above.
The second major flaw was a longitudinal bulkhead with no or at least very few piping penetrations which prevented the Yamato from counterflooding effectively once the TBFs followed the fighters and started putting holes in her side with torpedoes.
I doubt these deficiencies are modelled in any way in the game though.
I'm not sure but I may have put the Yamato out of action in one of my PBEM games with just a couple of bombs. I know she's not really hurtin but the smoke was pretty heavy when the planes left and she's not been heard from since though lots of the crowd she was hanging around with have been by to say hello.

Judging by what happened to the Shinano, the seams of all three
ships were vulnerable to any hit along the seam. Shinano split open and flooded, mostly because her captain refused to reduce speed. That is 30k tons of water pressure on the seam...not surprising she fell apart.

It boggles the mind when you realize how many AA guns were mounted on the Yamato:
