Looking at some of the posts, but am not seeing anything about these type of ships, they are not available at the start, which seems off. Am I missing something?

There are two different OOBs for the game. The classic Empires in Arms OOB (without light ships and transports) and the alternate Empires in Harm OOB (with them). There are also other differences in corps and fleet compositions, diplomatic situation at game start, and such. Marshall Ellis developed the game based mostly on alternate EIH. Based on many complaints from veteran players, I added the classic EIA features. Except for the map; the standard map is from EIH with several additional separate minors but essentially still the same.

Personally, I prefer the alternate EIH versions. As you get into the game more and try playing different countries, different campaigns, and different versions (something like 42 possibilities there, not counting the various AI difficulty settings), you will find what you like and don't like. Anyways, that's a long answer to your short question. Hope this helps.

P.S. Many players do not like to read game manuals. But this is a complex game that warrants a quick review of the many rules to see things for refernce later, then a full reading once you start to see things you don't fully understand, and then later a deeper study of the rules and strategy guides. It is a long journey. Enjoy!

You're welcome. Piracy is one of those new EIH features, which makes the alternate EIH version a bit more interesting. And cheap transports add a little something.
