Blue background when placing icons on map?

I know this was discussed before, at least I thought so, but a search didn't get me anywhere. I'm using Freds waw map editor, but when I place an icon on the map, it has a blue background, even when I turn off the 2-7 checks on top right of the editor, then, when I open the saved map in the ingame editor, the background is black, what gives!!!! I'm trying to get the feel for it, I want to take some of the new terrain shps from WAW, and use them in SPWW2, for my own install, using the WW2 version of mapedit. This requires exporting the bmp's from each shp file, then repacking them using the modified SPWW2 palette. I know that the terrain won't actually say 'wall', etc, but with some playing around with similar values for other terrain, I might get a close approximation of what I want, and the visual appeal would be there, Rockin Harry, any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong here? TIA,

Hey Mike,

seems you´re using "Tile Transfer" in Freds Map Editor? Make sure you set the correct layer/section, before you right click the icons onto the map!
Normally any ground terrain icons that don´t have any of the transparent pink color showing, go to the basic layer/section 2! If you leave it at that (data box "Sect" = 2) then any non ground terrain icon goes to that layer as well, resulting in any transparent pink showing up as blue on your SPWAW map!

I noted what layers are used for the various terrain types in my known Freds Map Edit doc file.
However, buildings normally go to layer/Sect5, trees and Ter86/90 stuff to layer/sect 6, paths/creeks to layer3 ect.

I noticed the SP2WW2 version used a somewhat modified Steel.pal file and I like the results, as it removes some of the too yellowish appearance of wheat tiles f.e Too bad, that a complete repacking of files is required to have the Steel.pal file any effect on the graphics.

Mike, what do you think can be improved in SPWAW palette and graphics, color wise? IMHO, the yellowish wheat, many of the silly looking blue building roofs and more.

Hey RH, I think that I will try your advice, I was setting it to 2, I'll try the other numbers, I downloaded your doc last night, but was too late to read it, was after I had tried editing. I think the reds in WAW are weird too, a shame we can't introduce shades too. always kills me how a new icon looks terrific until changed to a shape, then, eww, what happened!!!?:)

.....maybe, but the price is I might lag far behind you in CL matters!:D :D
Btw, working with unit icons does not require knowledge about Freds Map Editor! ;) :D

Unfortunately I have very little experience with working on terrain icons, I helped Nick Papp do the trees, gullies, and a few others, but he did all the rest!! I'm primarily interested in unit icons, but the terrain has a lot of options, it's just all those **** zoom levels to contend with, grrr!!

yeah, beside deciding what icon scale to choose for the zoom4 level (there´re different opinions about right scale out there), you also have to tackle the remaining zoom levels (x3) which is not that much work as you might expect when you have experience enough to do the job quickly in your prefered paint application! :D

You´re working with Paint Shop Pro, Mike?
