Ok the US task force has been carefully chosen, and I am anxiously waiting for my opponent ManicalMonkey to do his purchase.

This is going to be interesting as the map is so big (100 X 160), and there are only so few points to use. Lot's of space to maneuver here.

I hope I did the right decisions building my force, allthough I know I took some risks with it. Interesting to see what I'm up against.

Btw: Thanks alot to Frank W. for this brilliant idea of an AmmoSgt contest :)

Germany Ready!

Colonel Affe raised the heavy binoculars to his eyes and scanned the field one more time. His officers had left the Command Post to join their units, as battle was about to begin. Affe was worried - he had taken his abteilung from Germany to France, then Russia, then back to France, and now nearly back to Germany. Over the past month, since Rommel's marvellous "Atlantikwal" had collapsed like limp spätzle, they had been engaged in one fighting retreat after the other.

Now he would do battle as it was supposed to be - resolute, aggressive, powerful. They were making a stand in the area near Monkeyville - what idiot had come up with that name, he wondered? - to safeguard the further rerteat of the entire division. To this end his superiors had been kind enough to attach several more units to his depleted abteilung, and to bring his own companies back up to combat strength. But, still, it was a large area to fight in, and his kampfgruppe was dangerously stretched. At least from what sketchy intelligence reports he had received, he could make up that the enemy force was in not much better shape.

But of course, he thought bitterly, they had several key advantages. They had tanks and advanced equipment in numbers that the Wehrmacht hadn't even been able to dream of for years. Their soldiers were young and green, quite convinced that they were immortal and willing to take risks where veterans would fall back. Affe's men had seen too much over the past five years, they were weary and very well aware of their mortality. But still, they were good soldiers, men of iron - if a bit rusty.

Faint whistles sounded overhead - the artillery barrage had begun. Affe made his way back into the dugout and checked the clip of his Luger.

*** The Germans have finished deploying and are quite anxious to go to war. Best of luck to you, Sonni!

Herr Oberst Affe is getting worried! Been sitting in his command dugout for a week now and still nothing... The hole stinks up to high heaven as none of the HQ dare leave it in case the shooting starts without them!

What's up, Sonni?

I'm really sorry for the wait. I had two retake exams last week that I had to pass, and I was out of the country for the weekend. I'll try to play my turn tonight and send it to you tomorrow.

Didn't pass the other one :(

The germans have fired a lot of smoke so it is hard to tell from which way they are coming from. I've send out scouts to determine their positions, no contact yet.

Sergeant Conkling, lying flat on his belly beside the road near Intersection G, watched as the grey smoke began to rise above the trees. Good - this would buy Affe's companies valuable minutes to reach their positions while the Ami's would be unable to use any prepared positions. He turned to private Schultz to say something, but a characteristic engine sound sputtered across the hill in front of them.

"Stay low!" He hissed, as he full-loaded his MP40 and unscrewed the safety caps from two Stielhandgranate, carefully placing them in the grass before him. An American jeep came barreling down the road at full speed, and Conkling couldn't believe his eyes - the driver must have a death wish, he thought. As the jeep closed, he placed a hand on Schultz' shoulder to keep him down - the boy had arrived to the abtailung a few days ago and this was his first taste of combat.

"Jetzt!" Yelled Conkling, and the two soldiers jumped up, emptying their MP's into the jeep. Glass shattered, tires blew, the engine hood flew open, but the driver somehow managed to stay on the road. Gritting his teeth, Conkling picked up one of his grenades and lobbed it onto the road. The jeep passed over the grenade just as it exploded, and it's own momentum propelled it about six feet into the air before it came to a crashing halt on its side, amidst a shower of bits and pieces.

Amazingly, the driver survived, struggling to free himself from the burning wreck. As Conkling sprayed another full burst from his MP, Schultz tossed a grenade of his own. The explosion threw the American on his back, his chest and face a shrapnel-ridden mess, quite obviously dead. As sudden as the silence had been shattered, so it returned, and with their ears still ringing from the noise, Conkling and Schultz cautiously moved up to the dead American. He was barely older than Schultz. The blood-stained picture of a lovely young girl smiled up to them from inside the American's upturned helmet.

Schultz vomited. Conkling lit a cigarette. "Let's go," He said "There will be more of them soon."

***

Well, first turn played, nothing much happened. I'm pretty happy with the way my smoke screen turned out. A lone jeep made an insane dash across the road towards IS "G" and ran into a German recon team which made short work of it. The driver was dispatched shortly thereafter - first blood to the Reich! My forces move out to secure their positions.

Over to you, Sonni.

As I understand it, Sonni only has internet access at work, so let's wait out the weekend and see if he can get around to a few turns next week. If not, it'd probably be better if you took over. Just go easy, this is my first real PBEM :)
