Ran into this message trying to update DW2 to 1.2.7.7. How do I get around it?

That's strange. Haven't seen reports like this. Do you have multiple drives? Where is DW2 installed on your system? From what version of the game are you trying to update from?

I do have multiple drives
DW2 is installed on D:\Matrix\Distant Worlds 2
Updating from 1.2.2.0

When I try to update from the game menu I get the following.
So I downloaded the update file manually and ran it.

When I began to update from the launcher, it was pointed to the correct location.

Could you please confirm how exactly you're running the update installer for 1.2.7.7? Did you unzip the file completely? The update installer comes with a total of 3 files when unzipped - the 1st being the update exe and the others the additional update filesets. As long as you fully unzipped the update fileset from the download, the update installer should automatically detect these additional files and use them for installation.
