Question on old-school Depth Charge logic

I had thought I had asked this in the past, but I can't find anything in my post history, so I'm asking now, especially with the new Fail Safe DLC in mind.
For surface warships that have conventional depth charges (i.e. ones that roll off the stern and/or are thrown off the sides; NOT ASW Mortars), what is the AI's engagement logic?
I ask because I distinctly remember occasions playing Command where I would attempt to engage a submarine with depth charges, but not being able to due to the ship losing solid contact right when it gets into position.
This was apparently caused by the fact that the active sonar got solid pings on the contact until right before the charges could be launched (When my ship passed right overhead) and therefore since it lost solid contact, it couldn't engage.
Naturally, this goes against the basic reality of old-school depth charges, which of course have some degree of guesswork to them. You have to get your ship is the best position that you can tell, drop the charges, and hope for evidence of damage or a kill.
Do the surface ships in Command have this logic built into them for old school depth charges? or am I remembering my past experiences correctly and this is a major issue with scenarios from 1970 and earlier?
