I believe it would be useful to have a feature in doctrine whereby one could instruct a flight to "chicken out" in case of threat approaching. For example in a strike mission a/c in flight would keep their distance from approaching hostile-unfriendly contacts (something like "stay x nm away from hostile-unfriendly contacts"). It is like a drag defense against an a/c instead of a missile.

Maybe it is my style of play that I like larger scenarios without significantly micromanaging units.
