ASW

So a PT has a 10% chance of ASW hit
A Ki-49-1a has a 1% chance
An E-13A1 has a 0% chance
All have xp and skill of 70%
All fly at 5000 feet
Any suggestions to why the big difference and is there anything I can change?
I mean why even build FP with this data?

Its on the unit page, towards the top left. It does say bombing accuracy. However if you look at the bombing xp the Ki-49 has the best xp and the PT is pretty bad, both ground and naval bombing even if the naval bombing rating for those to units are the same 35 xp.
Maybe its not relevant, there are several subs there but they rarely see them or attack, if ever. Is the altitude too high? low?
I just thought that if I got the ASW and xp to 70 it would matter but they just suck
You could point to the naval search being better on the PT than the Ki-49, however the FP has high naval search to and they cant find anything despite subs being around

A couple of things, first I don't believe those % figure are "chance of hit" but more of a reflection of the units aggregate level of skill in its main mission. Second, in terms of ASW most players seem to believe a/c need to fly a lot lower than 5k to actually attack subs effectively. Third, remember that ASW weapons in the early stages of the war SUCK especially for the Japs, so early war expectation should be low in 41-43....... Finally in ASW sub suppression is the real key, sub damage/sinking is a bonus.

Thanks about the altitude, I have just felt that training ASW at 5000 makes it go faster but it could be an illusion

I do believe training at 5K will certainly reduce op losses over 1K training if that's any consolation.... but I've no knowledge of it being faster or slower.....

If the aircraft is set to ASW mission it will drop to attack altitude when it sees a sub. But subs are very hard to see, especially if you do not know they are in the area. Effective ASW requires knowing the sub is in the area (when it attacks or by SIGINT usually), finding it with naval search or patrolling vessels and then sending in the attack aircraft or vessels. It is rare to just bump into one and get a shot at it. US subs sometimes do because they have good radar long before the IJN so they usually get an initiative roll in their favour. But early in the game US torps mostly suck so the IJN subs are the ones that get the hits.
Training missions at 0 range rarely suffer ops losses so I train my ASW and search aircraft at 1000 feet. That way they also train faster in Defensive Skill.

True on safety but no effect on speed of training. For Ops 1K or 2K are best.
You have to remember the original roll of the a/c, there size and what they carried. Depth Charges being the primary ASW armament of which there were 3 types, but depth charges are not in the game. There were three types 60Kg, 180Kg and 250Kg the last one only carried on dedicated strikes (by PT) once a target was found. Generally the 60Kg was carried on patrol with the army mixing them up with standard bombs. The other thing is PT carried a lot more.
When these were not available ordinary bombs were used, ineffective underwater.
