[WAD] JDAM Interception

I have the impression that air defenses are able to "shoot down" incoming pairs of JDAMs (GBU-31) released from high altitude with relative ease. Am I correct to believe so? (I would think that because of their small radar cross-section, the relevant proximity of release and speed of descend, that would be a very hard task)

air defenses
That's..... a little vague.

Some air-defence systems are explicitly designed to engage PGMs, so it's not unreasonable that they can do this consistently.

Others, less so.

Provide more details, ideally a save. Context matters.

1. Here you go. Please see image and save file (the strike mission from Vietnam to Hainan)
2. Also a secondary question: why the second single flight aircraft aborts and does it not release payload?)

I believe the second aircraft does not release its weapons because in the WRA under Weapons Salvo you have "use targets Missile Defense value" set for the target (Land Structure - Hardened - Building (Underground). Under Shooters Per Salvo you have "Fire weapons from enough units to fill the salvo's Weapon Quantity requirement. The missile defense value for the targets 1 Harpoon/SLAM/Maverick equivalent. With those settings the first aircraft is able to launch one weapon at each target adhering to the WRA for the mission.

Change the settings for Weapons Salvo to Twice as many weapons as Missile Defense value or simply two rounds. That will do it.

In my run through with your save file two weapons were launched at each target.

MK83's are large 1000pd bombs and the HQ-16B is a modern medium range SAM, there's nothing strange about this result. JDAM's aren't the bombs themselves they are guidance kits that are attached to general purpose bombs like MK-83.

I switched sides in the editor and it appears that the Jdams were detected by HQ-16 FCR on operating band I at a distance of 9+ miles from the radar. Looking at the frontal signature data of GBU 32 (-16.5, 0.002 sqm) the question is whether this detection performance is really expected from a 90s radar

Very interesting! As the posts are very recent we may concluded that CMO has prophetically simulated the battlefield!

Thank you
