Air Intercept Missions - Engaged Offensive

In air intercept missions there is the option to set the maximum mission range. This indeed works as a trigger for the mission if a bogey enters the range. However, if one or more a/c engage offensive they tend to pursue the enemy a/c for ever (unless they shoot it down of course) which, more often than not, results in fuel problems if one forgets to micromanage. Should not the range work as an outer limit for prosecution as well?

If you make it work that way, then it becomes trivial for the enemy (or a human player against the AI) to feint out the hot-pad intercept force and then send-in his main strike.

Have you adjusted the fuel state, Preplanned ROE for the side, mission, or unit? If everything is working, it's a one-and-done setting to catch the edge cases.

Sure. The fuel state is a (partial) solution. The problem also arises when the interceptors go berserk and chase enemy far away deep into enemy territory finding themselves in the net of AAW patrols and SAM ranges. I have lost planes that way.

No Nav zone might help with that one.
You could even use the event editor to generate a popup message using one of the area triggers and a message action if it's really a big thing for you.
Thanks!
