I am reviewing the OOB for Japanese units and many of them have a few HMG squads. When I look to the upgrade those squads are converted to normal infantry. It seems the stats for the HMG squads are considerably higher than the stats for Chinese infantry so it seems like a downgrade.

Do you try to keep the SMG squads for use or do you just upgrade the units?

Those are both restricted units. I wouldn't waste my time upgrading them. Your title says Chinese by the way....GP

Yes, it lists Chinese Inf Squad and Chinese HMG squads in the TOE.

Am I missing something obvious?

So the answer is definitely no, particularly because they are restricted but also because it makes them weaker.

Given that the re-supply is 1 per month for both types and there is no reserve this is not going to play a pivotal part in the war I guess.

The only reason to upgrade would be if there were no HMG squads to reinforce but there were infantry left in the pool.

Just trying to get a handle on all the bits and quirks of the Japanese(Chinese) military.

Those are the Chinese who worked with the Japanese. I would use them solely for garrison duty. I would not upgrade them unless they took MG losses.

I totally agree with all the comments. The only thing they are for is to garrison Chinese cities to free up combat units. Don’t waste resources on upgrades or replacements.

Makes no difference which ever one you use to the assualt strength of the unit. Not sure what 4 MG make to the defensive aspect.

The firepower and the AV is different. The squad with a firepower of 10 will could for AV as much as the most powerful squad or tank.

So if you are using those weak and poorly trained Chinese units for garrison duties, it does not matter if it is a Chinese squad or a Chinese MG squad.
