Back in the Game Again

Hi guys! It's been a couple of years. I needed a break. A few weeks ago, I got the itch again. I have a new computer, so I had to install the game. I have a Mac, so I had to jump through the hoops to fire it up. Interestingly, a few days ago, I got a message that my old opponent of many years, Ted (tc464), had a birthday. I sent him an email wishing him a happy birthday, caught him up on my life, asked him how he was doing, and mentioned to him that I got the itch and was reinstalling WitP. I left it at that.

I got a reply from him. He caught me up on his life and mentioned that he had just reinstalled WitP and had downloaded Scenario 29, DaBigBabes-C and was just a few turns into it. Then he asked if I would fancy a game with him. Interestingly, we both are interested in starting the game on 8 Dec 41. So, we're going to start another game.

I am REALLY excited. Not sure if I'll do an AAR though. We'll see about that. Anyway, I'm not a computer geek. Can anyone talk me through where I need to put the files for that mod?

It's good to be back and see all of those old names from years past still hashing out this wonderful game.

Mike

Welcome back!

I thought that I had already posted but somehow my post disappeared. :?

Please do an AAR, especially how you set up your R & D, and other industries not to mention the shipping. I have used your previous AARs to help me set up my IJ production and I have referred others to your AAR so they can learn how to set up their industries

Thanks, guys. I finally got my computer squared away and am starting the first turn. Ted and I are starting DaBigBabes-C, Scenario 29 beginning on 8 Dec 41. I'm going to do some of my checklist (25 items total), and get the turn to Ted, hopefully within a week. I won't do it all like I normally do. I'm still not sold on doing an AAR. We'll see...

Oh yeah, I'm the Japanese player, in case someone was wondering...

You must be really busy in your retirement!

I am now, Joe!

So, realistic R&D on or off?

Edit: I'm going with R&D off.

Since you are experienced, I would suggest going with it on. For newer players or new players for Japan, I would suggest with it off in case they make errors and let factories go into production.

Nah, I never go with realistic RnD any more ... it doesn't really impact my game, but it does create just that much more work for the IJ. Never worth it for me.

How about PDU? On or Off?

I though about getting back into this again as well, but there no way i am playing against AI while playing Japan. The AI cheats!

Idk really hard to find good players willing to stick with the house rules and not to cheat at the beginning, knowing where everything is from the start.

On, never off, It's too easy with it off. Against the AI I'd go even further and force the continues research of all aircraft that start in an R&D factory only changing them when they enter service. Why, well mostly you don't know how good they are unitl they do enter service. This would be true realistic R&D.

Complete opposite of what Pax says but ultimately it's up to you.

PDU on. This gives you the flexibility to produce and use only those that do work once you have completed research. See above.

Definitely PDU ON, this way you only make 12 Oscars for the gorse, who are very good in China for training pilots, and you can make 350 gorse quickly and train with them.
You also avoid making 500 Oscars or more, which is a waste of engines and pilots who are in an Oscar, the Oscar and the pilot fall.

RnD isn't done with a production factory, it is done in a prototyping fab. Hand milled and hand assembled parts. Totally different environments and the prototyping fab can't and never does become a production line. In many cases they are at completely different sites. this was true in '30's and still true today. So the naming is a misnomer to begin with in game.

True, realistic RnD would be something like:
Require that you invest in design teams/centers, funding them with supply, until a new model is available. Then the model gets transferred to a factory, a lot more investment in tooling (supply cost + time) and then production starts to ramp up.

As implemented in the game this feature only impacts players that change factories which a good IJ player should NEVER do as it costs supply that the IJ does not have. What you set up for at start is what you have at the end. This is why I say for me it has zero impact and is just a nuisance. OFF is the best option. Now, for training purposes to get you into the habit of not changing factories, maybe ON would work for that.

Sorry to disagree with you.

With Realistic R & D off, you can take a production factory and start researching with it. That means that you can have it built up to size 30 with a model that is being produced and then move it to a model that is being researched. That is why if I play with Realistic R & D on, I only use it to correct errors such as letting the factory go into production or if I accidentally change it into a production factory by changing the factory to a model that is in production.

Welcome back! Will you guys be using the new beta exe? Would love to see you guys do another AAR!

PDU off and Realistic RnD on here! Although you guys are making me consider using Realistic RnD off with the restrictions you suggest. I like a more historical game and less star wars!
