Automatic map ownership change?

Especially in the USSR as Axis I often employ the tactics where I rush forward to empty land with a cavalry or armor taking hexes and destroying railroads for the enemy. I noticed that some hexes are reverting to the owner (USSR) without any unit passing through it. Also sometimes it works to the Axis favor (if I correctly noticed) because e.g. the Kola peninsula is slowly becoming Axis if all surrounded territory is taken and no Allied units are around.
Is that correct? How exactly the mechanics are working if one can tell?

Out of supply hexes convert to an opponent that has supply next to that hex.
So say you bust through a line. You run back 12 hexes. Well none of those can get suppply except maybe the first 2. The enemy does nothing. You keep running around in the back another 10 hexes. Well most of those hexes will convert back.
Consider your unit is just trampling around and not leaving garrisons, building rail, or doing anything. Why would those hexes come under your control with no supply link?

The board game Third Reich does have this mechanism, WarPlan is a little more realistic about it.

Thank you for the answer!
Don't get me wrong, I was just wondering about it as I wasn't sure. It makes sense and now I know.

Actually I think I am glad that you though about this detail.

I remember those Third Reich games where 2 panzers ran in my backside cutting off 1/2 my front line and held the control AND out of supply units can't move... So infuriating

My solution to that (in France) was to swamp the map with low factor troops 4 layers deep and attrition back the panzers.
