It seems silly that ships cannot move from the Carribean & North american east coast directly to the Mediteranean. Instead they have to go thru west africa or northern europe first. What is the justification for this?

1. Game reasons - the game doesn't handle large sea zones well. Back when The Baltic was a part of The Atlantic, it was very common for battles to be spawned in the approaches to Russia, even for nations like France and the UK.

2. Real Life Reason - most ships need to travel excruciatingly slowly to have the range to steam from, say, New York to Rome. I can't remember which particular US Battleship class it was, but the nominal 8,000 mile range was only achievable at 10kn, but at 12kn they could make 6,400 miles on a clean hull or 5,900ish miles on a fouled hull. Therefore, consider it to be a refuelling stop.
