Is their a possibility of this game being produced in a Windows format? It's a great game, but if it is not modernised and brought up to par with modern computer formats I fear that it will die as your old 486's die off. Yes I know that it will run now on most Windows systems, but how long do you think this will last? MS is making new operating systems every day that will not run DOS games. I love the game but it needs to be modernised or it will fall by the way like so many others have because of obsolessence.

Don't let this happen. Also just think of the possibillities of an upgrade. New units, better editor, nicer map and graphics, and just better quality all around based on the same format! would'nt be nice?!

"SMERTV FASCHISTSKIM OKKUPANTAM!"
The last two words are easy....what is Smertv...and how'd ya pronounce it"?
I'd not mind an upgrade either...but nothing of the Possum vein where Ivan is unbeatable.
Tougher on the ground after the autumn muds of 41...but their air force was mud...even near the end it was quantity, not quality. Perhaps they should be able to build more planes

I would not hold my breath. 2by3 was working on
this. In case you did not know it 2by3 is operated by the same folks who developed the Original War In Russia. However, due to the amount of time being spent on War In the Pacfic (WitP), also by 2by3 it will be a long time before the new east front game is completed. Further during an inteview at the Wargamer the devs admitted that WitP was almost overly ambitious in scope.
Hopefully this does not come across as a rant. I wish Matrix and 2by3 nothing but the best, but personally I would perfer a new east front game over another Pacfic Theatre game or a UV Mediterranean. If anything will just have to be grateful to Arnaud Bouis and others who have continued to extend the life of this classic game.

I just transcribed it from the text on a plastic model of an Il-2, which in turn supposedly is based on an actual plane during the war. I think it means "Death to" or something to that effect. In cyrillic letters it looks like this: CMEPTb.

gfish22, I belive they are making a big mistake. The med and pacific have their fans but not like WIR. A good modern version of this game made for Windows would create another fan base while keeping those with the original game happy. Don't get me wrong, I love this game. But it should be modernised before its to late!!

Kevin-
I agree with everything you are saying. Unfortunately, those of us that share the wargaming hobby are niche market, in particular those that enjoy operational/grand strategic level games, therefore I do not foresee many of these titles being developed. Regarding WIR, in my opinion, I think Arnaud has done about as much as he can with the game. I encourage you to check out the link in my other post to the 2by3 web site and check out the USSR war game.
Also another game worth looking at is
Russo-German War, it is a slightly older game, first developed back in 2000, supposedly the a series of patches have greatly improved gameplay. I don't own the game so I cannot give it a testimonial.
I don't know if you check out
comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.war-historical but on occasion you will find a few scraps of information about strategic level games. I have found an old
post by Norm Koger, the developer of the Operational Art of War regarding a strategic level game he was working on, this was back in 2001.
I almost forgot, but if he still posts here, Ed Cogburn is a wealth of information, search for WIR 3 and his name and it should turn up some information.

By the way, scores of Soviet top aces were higher than those of best American pilots. Moreover, usually Americans enjoyed odds greater than Russians did, so if Russian air force was mud then American force was total ****
