Playing as Allied at Nov. 1942, I’ve started planting minefields in Japanese ports and likely avenues of ship transit. But I don’t seem to get notifications of Japanese ships hitting these mines (if any have yet), and I haven’t seen any notifications in the OP. Do you get notified if a Japanese ship hits one of my mines?

Not specifically. You may hear an explosion that may be a mine being detonated. You may see ships sunk by mines.

Check your after-action report after a turn in which you hear a naval mine explosion. It'll give some information, but it won't disclose if a enemy ship sank later. Also, minefields planted in enemy ports tend to deteriorate in size and effectiveness quicker than minefields in friendly ports since they can't be tended to.

Nope. But if you look at the sunk ships report, sometimes you will see a ship that was sunk by unknown means or by a mine. You just have to compare the hex sunk in to you minefields....GP

IRL how would you know an enemy ship had hit a mine unless you saw it happen or interceted a signal.

In the “ships sunk” section of the information panel, the cause of the sinking is shown. I found several Japanese ships sunk by mines, and quite a few ‘unknowns’, mainly destroyers. I suppose at least some of them would be from mines.
