I had the experience of defending a shore bombardment mission. The enemy ships were shooting at the target, I could see the shots hitting the target, but the enemy ships were out of my line of sight, even though I was between them and the target. You would think that even if you couldn't sight the ships under normal circumstances, their gunflashes would have been visible to me. In general, at night, ships should be visible from considerably farther away if they are firing.

A bit like on the radar, flickering into view for a second when it fires?
