National Flags and roundels on unit counters

Just for a bit a flavor; I have a soft spot for counters like you'd find in Red Strike by VUCA Simulations. Due to how the counters are laid out and change shape/detail depending on how zoomed in or out you are, I did my best in having them at least recognizable. Note that if you are like me and prefer to just have straight NATO symbols for your units, you will want to use the roundels (e.g. USSR-BGD-R.png) over the national flag. Warsaw Pact units have the flag on the left side to allow for better visibility with their SILs; NATO on the right side for the same reason. Roundels are on the left as to prevent interfering with the emitter icon; to my knowledge the only symbology on the left hand side is the "core unit" symbol for campaigns.

To enable:

Throw the files into your \\Flashpoint Campaigns Cold War\Modules\FCCW\Data folder. In each nation's file in FCCW\Data, you go to \\Backgrounds\Custom and then delete off the "-f" or "-r" for either the flag or roundel. Or you could just make a copy and rename it "[NATION]-BDG.png" so when you want to disable, simply delete the file.

EDIT: New version (version 2) uploaded to fix the command cycle colors from pulling the wrong info from the counter. E.g. the Canadians would have a red command cycle bar that is confusing if the Soviets are also red.

Edit: Confirmed it will work with the old colored units/SILs mod from FCSS.

Well crap; apparently the command cycle bars are somehow influenced by the major color(s) of the unit counters, so for example if it's the Canadians vs the Soviets both bars show up red. I did test the roundels and they appear to not take up enough space to effect the command cycle coloring. I might test with smaller flags to see if they can be made to not play around with any other game features.

Edit: Resizing resolved the issue; fortunately I saved templates while I was creating these in GIMP 2, so a fix should be out today. Due to the size change, WP flags will also go to the upper right. Unfortunately HQ units are going to have theirs covered by the "H", but overall everything looks nice. A nice side effect is that the flags are also more visible with NATO counters, so I guess you could use them in that situation if you don't mind the NATO symbol slightly covering you nation's flag.

Version 2; the unexpected interaction with the command cycle bar should be gone. I also fixed some alignment issues with the British, Belgian, and Polish roundels as the counters for the new nations have slightly different dimensions. BLUF: even though they were in the same grid location as the original nation roundels, they were coming out slightly lower on the counter.

Neat! 8-)
Did mess around a bit with a concept of puting the country flag (subdued a bit) in the lower part (like the seize of the grey field on the Polish icons) but never really completed it. Could be something for you to take a stab at *hint hint* ;)

I played around with the idea (had to create a good counter background with multiple layers to get it to look "right"); seems to not trigger the command cycle bar issue:

Smaller roundel:

Large roundel (I don't really like this; counter info interferes a lot with it plus for some nations the color will merge with the movement arrows):

I think the roundel placed in the bottom area looks better vs the national flags. E.g. the East German one stretched out all the way loses a lot of the red and yellow.

Edit:

Maybe an off-center roundel?

Yeh its easy to get it to obscure the info on the counter unfortunatly. I fiddled alot with dimming the flag graphics.
But your versions are nice. Provides alot of options for diffrent player tastes. Thx!👍

Should be my final version of this. Changes:

- UK and Belgian roundels adjusted to be a bit higher due to the counter size difference.
- Soviet and Polish flags had a black background added to give them a border outline to make them distinct from the counter background. Zooming out kind reduces the effect, but I also didn't want it too obvious at those who run the game zoomed in at 100% (default).
- Soviet roundel given a white outline to make the star shape stand out more without having the resize.
- Transparent versions of both graphics included if you just want it faintly visible and not clashing with the HQ "H" text.
