Question About Scenario 2 Red Tide

After an initial drubbing on my first effort I was able on the second try to score about 800. I was pretty happy about that. But, you need 1000 to move on in the campaign, I guess.
In looking at the final stats, it would seem that my efforts lacked defensive quality. I sank a lot of ships (Eisenhower included). But the losses the Soviets sustained were devastating.
My question is this. How can losses be minimized in this particular scenario? The Soviet player is in plain sight and is easily tracked by the many hostile aircraft and surface vessels which remain in close pursuit throughout.
I realize that the scenario as designed contemplates a bloodbath, but I wonder if anyone has come across a way to better defend the Soviet assets, at least well enough to advance the campaign?
Thanks,
Michael
