the window which opens with the key "Z" (here german keyboard) for showing Range and Cycles for planes is only working if the "2xPopupsize" in the preferences is set to 1 ... else you get an empty window

Did you use the default video settings or applied any changes to it ?
Can I see a screenshot of your Preferences ?
The monitor and game resolution should be written there.
