Does the Max React button actually work?

I had a situation where the BB Jaime and CL Libertad were patrolling in blockade at least two hexes off the coast of Mallorca, with Max React set to 0. They then chased a Nationalist xAKL right up to the doorstep of Palma (1 hex off) taking massive damage from the CD units in multiple hexes. I know from WITP experience that allowing a react range can be problematic, so I was using my old habit of keeping it at zero (except for submarines). Why did they react into danger?

The manual seems to indicate that the aggressiveness of the TF commander might affect aggressiveness of the reaction range and retreat tendency, at least for patrols, though I couldn't find an on-point section that expressly addressed what happens with Max React set to 0, except that that's the default react range for many TFs.

It could be a bug, but I might check out the aggressiveness of your leader. My suspicion is that surface combat missions are heavily affected by leader quality, but I'm not completely sure- in the one game I've played so far I've seen Republicans react all over the place and then completely ignore other transports I've sent with a few PBs.

Actually, check your standoff distance from shore.

Thanks, Joe. That is a new addition I overlooked. Unfortunately the CD guns around Palma outrange those on my ships.

You are most welcome.

Yes, those older ships guns don't have the range but check the range on the CLs and the Nationalists CAs.

If you can provide the saves of the action, before mid, after, then I can examine the TF reaction.

I am sorry, but I have run many turns since then and have started a new campaign, so those saves have been superseded. In the future if I run into something questionable enough to post about I will make separate saves for when these requests pop up. My apologies for not being able to provide you with the tools necessary to investigate the issue.
