I just noticed that simply by executing the Air Phase (No air directives enabled, all air units on Rest), my vehicle pool was reduced by close to 6k, seemingly going into Depots.

Like why? Admittedly it is Mud and some bases are low on Ammo. And its the first turn in April 43 where air unit size goes from 20 to 32, I think.

Any thoughts on how I get them back?

It was caused by air sqd size going from 20 to 32. This means that every airbase starts the turn low on ammo and the Air Phase tops them up. In mud this is a disaster.

Solution (I hope) - send the complete Red Airforce to the Reserve. How historical is that.
