I want to buy the WiF game box verson that matches the Matrix WiF game.

Is it WiFFE v6 or v7 that his game is based on?

It's called the Final Edition, which I believe was version 7. The most recent version is called the Collector's Edition.

There is one major difference even if you can find and buy WiFFE (now superseded by the Collector's Edition - CWiF). The map in MWiF is European scale for the whole world. Originally you could buy the map pack here but you'd need an area about 27 feet long by 9 feet high to use it with everything else you would get in WiFFE.

CWiF is your best bet since a lot of the rules changes correct various loopholes in WiFFE.

Quick remark to WIF nomenclature:
The current boardgame edition of WIF is usually addressed as WIFCE, as the successor to WIFFE.
CWIF, on the other hand, was called the precursor of MWIF = Computer World in Flames, programmed by Chris Marinacci on behalf of Harry Rowland. Steve Hokansson used then CWIF as base for his MWIF development.

WiF (FE & CE) have different map scale (or hex sizes) for Europe/Africa than for Asian/Pacific. The Asian/Pacific hex scale is double of that for Europe/Africa. What this means, for example, is if you have a 4 mover land unit that this unit in clear terrain & fine weather can move 4 hexes in Europe/Africa but only 2 hexes in Asian/Pacific. The same with aircraft ranges (i.e., their range is halved in Asia/Pacific vs Europe/Africa).

Zone of Control (ZOC) are a bit different too between the two scales. In Europe/Africa, a corps/army exerts a ZOC into adjacent hexes (unless blocked by sea, lakes or alpine hexside); whereas in Asian/Pacific it takes two corps/armies in different hexes to excerpt a ZOC over a given hex.

And let's not forget about supply range. For Europe/Africa basic supply length is 4 hexes; whereas in Asian/Pacific it's 2 hexes.

None of that applies to MWIF. MWIF uses the Europe/African hex scale across the map (i.e., in Asian/Pacific). Ranges, ZOC, supply paths are all the same across the map.

Whether that's a good thing or not? For me it is because I learned and played MWIF vs WIF FE or CE. For those who learned and played WIF FE or CE, they'll have to answer for themselves.

It means that in the board game European map is similar to the computer game.

If the maps for the rest of the world where at the same scale, you would need a huge space to play the board game, so:
- the boardgame uses maps for the rest of the world (except Europe) where the hexes represent double the distance, making them smaller by comparison.
- alternatively, you could buy the maps that were released with the computer game (MWiF) and play in a very big room, as seen here:

Except the map pack is no longer offered by Matrix, if you check their store. I suspect it took awhile to run out of such a specialty item and they have no plans to print more.

The map for MWiF looks like this. I was one of the people who got the six-piece hardcopy version.

So lucky, just picked up the game on sale! Cannot wait to dive in.
